Welcome to the new Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers website!

Who are the SBMTV?
We are a group of advocates dedicated to building a trail community and sustainable trail system through continued volunteer work. And, some of us also enjoy riding mountain bikes. The Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers formed over 15 years ago in response to threatened trail closures. Since then the Trail Volunteers have worked hard to promote responsible mountain bike trail use and volunteer trail maintenance activities. We are currently focusing our energy on rider education and the development of closer ties between members of the trail community. For more information on your trail community, check www.sbtrails.org

What we do
Trail maintenance, building and repair:
We organize and conduct volunteer trail maintenance events to preserve the trails for everyone's enjoyment. Events are held monthly March through November and are open to all trail users.

Trail User Education:
Our local trails are receiving more use than ever before. It is very important that everyone using the trails behaves in a responsible and courteous way. SBMTV's Trail Head education program informs trail users of proper trail etiquette and encourages everyone to respect their fellow trail users.

Advocacy:
SBMTV leads the way in advocating for increased trail opportunities for all trail users. We also work for the preservation of open space and wild places.

What we have done:
» Fifteen straight years of trail maintenance with 2000+ volunteer hours of work each of the past 3 years.

» Started a local bike bell / user education program that has helped ease trail user tensions and created a safer trail network.

» Initiated the development of a Downhill/Freeride specific riding facility on the south coast.

» Developed ties between SBMTV and local equestrian groups in the interest of fostering better understanding and cooperation.

Saturday November 17th public meeting of the Front Country Trails Task Force. This is another opportunity to for you to comment on our trail system. 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Louise Lowry Davis Center 1232 De la Vina St., Santa Barbara The Front Country Trails Task Force will be reviewing, commenting, and asking questions about the different types of trail management options that can be applied to the Santa Barbara Trails (Agency staff has prepared a number of these management recommendations). This meeting is another opportunity to for you to comment on our trail system.
Agenda
Recommendations

The Santa Barbara County Trails Council has submitted a "Trails Managment Recommendation" to the Task Force. The main points of this recommendation are included below.
Trails Council Recommendation Letter

Both the Los Padres Forest Association and the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike trail volunteers have submitted letters of support for the Trails Council's recommendation.

SBMTV has also resubmitted an updated statement on the 2005 FCTWG Proposal and a detailed description of many of the common trail management pieces that are included in these recommendations.

Please review these documents before the meeting.

SBMTV supports the Trails Council recommendation because it closely matches and follows the trail management options that SBMTV has been discussing with the City, County, and Forest Service for many years. The following recommendation does not seek to restrict users from trails, but seeks to collect objective data in order for the agencies to make the best management decisions, seeks to educate agency staff in the ways of trails management, and seeks to build partnerships between agencies and advocacy organizations. For almost twenty years, SBMTV has quietly worked towards these goals - it looks like we may be getting closer to a cooperative and collaborative trail system in Santa Barbara.

Trails Council Trails Management Recommendation Short-Term (Year 2008):
  • Governmental agencies partner with one or more non-profit, representative trail advocacy organizations to assist in the implementation of short-term management steps.
  • Inventory, assess and survey trails, and compile data in an organized presentable format.
  • Trails management training. (Agency staff and trail advocates)
  • Fund, design, and implement basic trail head signage on the original identified trails at minimum.
  • Implement volunteer trail patrols and education.
  • Review adaptive management options.

Long-Term (Year 2009 and beyond):
  • Secure long-term MOU and/or non-profit partnership.
  • Development of "Best Practices" strategies for a long-term Trails Management Plan based on the trail inventory, assessment, and survey data.
  • Assemble a Risk Assessment and Management Team.
  • Assemble a trail funding team.
  • Establish trail planning, design, and construction guidelines.
  • Management of a trail maintenance program.
  • Establish trail inspection system and maintenance polices agreed upon by the jurisdictions.
  • Implement a trail difficulty rating system.
  • Research, plan, and develop new trail opportunities beginning with the most easily attainable and/or upon existing easements.
  • Further develop and modify signage system to be effective and universally understood.
  • Develop a coordinated emergency plan with local safety agencies.
  • Create a record keeping system.
  • Develop an accident reporting and analysis system.

And a note from Santa Barbara City Staff:

"The Task Force will not be taking any action at this meeting. They will be initiating discussion that will likely continue to the February 2008 meeting and beyond. Please remember that the purpose of the Task Force is to assess trail issues and then make recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors, Santa Barbara City Council and the Forest Superintendent. There is no mechanism for the Task Force to make policy decisions. There will be ongoing opportunity for public comment. Task Force will not be taking any action to limit trail use in the near future."
